Multiworks completed the ‘enabling works package’ for the widening of runway 16/34 at Melbourne Airport. Engaged by the principal contractor, John Holland Constructions and ATS McMahon, the project preceded a $20M contract to widen the runway for the arrival of the Airbus A380. Works included;

  • The extension and abandonment of approximately 30 duct banks containing 159 individual asbestos conduits.
  • Internal sleeving of asbestos conduits with approximately 2000m of PVC conduit.
  • Excavation of existing cables with non-destructive high pressure water jetting and vacuum extraction.
Work shifts commences at approximately 1 am with all personnel and equipment required to be clear of the runway by 5am. To avoid loose debris being sucked into aircraft engines all exposed soil was either plated or sprayed with bitumen emulsion at the conclusion of each shift.
